How one project is rekindling interest in mangroves in the Maldives

What comes to mind when you think of the Maldives? For many people, the name conjures images of expensive resorts on palm-fringed atolls, beaches of white sand and sparkling surf. Less well-known is that the Maldives are also home to mangrove forests, and though these trees were once intrinsic to the lives of Maldivians, their apparent value has diminished with the changing times.
Through an MFF project, two women -- lecturers at the Maldives National University -- are leading a team of academics and students to demonstrate how crucial mangroves are, and why they are an ecosystem worth protecting.
